How To Create Your Website Using WordPress- Beginner Guide Part 2

Explaining WordPress Dashboard And Features – How To create Your Website using WordPress- Beginner Guide Part 2

A Quick Tour of the WordPress Dashboard

The WordPress dashboard is basically the control center for your site or let’s simply say your ” publishing work station” before production for public viewing or displaying. It’s where you’ll add new content, configure how your website looks, add functionality, and lots more.
You can always access your dashboard by going to:
yourdomain.com/wp-admin ⇒ means you can login at the back end of your WordPress website as a site administrator to get to your Dashboard
(work station).
To do that point your cursor (mouse) right at the top search bar that displays your website address (domain) and click where it ends with dotcom in order to write wp-admin so now you will have written yourdomain.com/wp-admin. Then enter your user name and password to login to come to the page shown below.

Have some time to go through it. May take couple of days, weeks probably months before you start mastering the whole program doing stylish designs and may be coding in your own-who knows. But for the main time let’s stick to the basics.

If you click the links it will take you to different pages with editing tools. On the left-hand side above, you have links to access all the various areas of your dashboard. And on the right-hand side, you have a basic summary of your WordPress site. Example on the activity list the Hello World! you have seen earlier is written there. Any posts you publish display in this section.

Explaining briefly section or word by word the above dashboard.

1. Posts ⇒ This is where you do your blog post. Like any content you want to write frequently to post and share.

The Difference Between Posts and Pages
Menus (Appearances > Menu)
To include pages like “About”, “Blog”, “Contact” and “Our Services” as part of your primary menu. Any page you’d like displayed on your menu can be added here. The number of menus and their placement on your site depends on your WordPress theme.
You can add all the stuff that you see on the menu ranging from pages to products as part of your menu.
Posts and pages both offer the same basic options, but you should use them differently.
A post is basically like a blog post as said. That is, it will have a “Publish date” and show up in in a reverse-chronological list on your blog post.
A page, on the other hand, houses more permanent information like an About page or a Contact page.

How to Add New Posts and Pages
To add new posts and pages, you can go to either:
Posts → Add New
Pages → Add New
There, you’ll be in something called the WordPress Editor. The WordPress Editor lets you:
Give the post or page a title
Add content
Format content
Upload images and other media to use in your content
Add a category or tag (only for posts)
To add content, just type in the box. You can format it by using the icons at the top, and you can upload images to your site by clicking Add Media (your image choice to go in with your content

2. Media This where it stores your images-videos-gifs-when you upload them from your desktop computer to build your website or blog posts.
3. Pages ⇒ As described above refers to your site pages such as your -About Us-Contact Us-Our Services pages which you will build on your front page-they correspond well with the front page functions (Main menu) through a built in link depending on your theme.
4. Comments ⇒ Nothing technical. You can edit or delete if you want.
5. Appearance (Themes) This is the most interesting part in all WordPress web site designs. A Theme is sort of like a image on the outside but on the inside is a style, or a program that adds functionality to your site like apps or plugins. That is, themes change how your site looks on the outside, but don’t change the core content or functionality underneath the theme.

Where to Find WordPress Themes

There are thousands of free WordPress themes to choose from WordPress.org theme directory – or you can check bellow.
⦁ Ocean WP -Great themes
⦁ Theme Forest – a huge marketplace of exclusively premium themes.
⦁ Elegant Themes – a popular developer that sells high-quality themes.

Install and Configure a WordPress Theme
When you first install WordPress, your site is probably going to look something like this:

6. Plugins

Add Plugins to Extend Functionality
Plugins are another type of tool that help you extend WordPress. Unlike themes, which primarily make style changes, plugins are all about adding new functionality to your WordPress site.
That functionality might be something small, like a contact form or a new button, or it might be something massive, like turning your site into an eCommerce store or a social network and more. There are up to 50 000 plugins available to choose from.
Basically, plugins unlock new features without requiring you to know anything about code. They’re pretty awesome!

How to Install WordPress Plugins from WordPress.org

If you found a free plugin at the official WordPress.org plugin directory, here’s how to install it:

7. Customize

Any changes you want do in you website such as uploading images-editing contents-changing fonts-themes-logo-color back ground or menu settings etc.. you style them from here by clicking Customize and following set instructions thoroughly to design a good website. The best you get is buying a best theme and plugins that is already available on your dashboard.

8. Tools, Wizards, Editor etc..

As said we are beginners, let’s only deal with basic stuff before going any further (Tools, Wizards-Editor) . All we want is to have simple website so that we can start making money. That SIMPLE. The only thing you probably need is your logo.  If your want to add logo to your front page, I have a tutorial coming next. I didn’t bother you earlier to avoid stuffing you up with a lot of information. Information OVERLOAD is not cool for you as a beginner especially on a blog post. But if you want to do it on your own, visit logomakr.com. They have easy features to use such as drag and drop-cropping-editing text styles and so on built in.

By now you should be able to design a web page in your own having the basics explained. So, lets play around with the program first and master it. I am guiding you through the process but how you design and the way it will look is all in you. Good luck with your web designs.
